Hard-water stains are white mineral deposits from sprinklers or pool splash that bond to glass. Salt film is a cloudy haze from ocean spray. Both need a mild acid or polishing treatment that regular cleaning cannot do. If spots stay after a normal wash, the glass needs restoration before the minerals etch it permanently.

Salt film vs. hard-water spots

Salt film is an even, cloudy haze on ocean-facing glass. It comes off with the right rinse and polish if it is treated within a few months. Hard-water spots are sharp-edged white dots or drip lines, usually on lower panes near sprinklers, pools and fountains. Left for a year or more, the minerals etch the glass and the damage becomes permanent.

Our restoration process

Every job starts with a test patch, so you see the result before we treat the whole window.

  • Assess: identify the deposit type and check for coatings and etching.
  • Test: treat a small corner and agree on the result with you.
  • Restore: apply a glass-safe mineral remover or a cerium-oxide polish where allowed.
  • Protect: optional hydrophobic sealant that makes future spots easier to remove.
  • Prevent: advice on sprinkler heads and timing to stop new spots.

Stop the spots from coming back

Most new spots come from irrigation hitting the glass. Turning sprinkler heads 10–15 degrees, or running them before sunrise so the water does not bake on, prevents most of the damage. A sealant and a 3-month maintenance clean do the rest.

Hard-Water & Salt-Film Removal: common questions

Can every hard-water stain be removed?

Most can. If minerals have etched the glass for years, polishing improves it a lot but cannot always make it perfect. The test patch shows you what to expect.

Is it safe for impact or Low-E windows?

Yes, with the right products. We check the glass type first and never use abrasive methods on coatings that do not allow it.

How long does it last?

The removal is permanent. New spots come back only if water keeps hitting the glass, which is why we help you fix the source.

How do I stop the spots from coming back?

Most new spots come from irrigation hitting the glass. Turning sprinkler heads 10–15 degrees, or running them before sunrise so the water does not bake on, prevents most of the damage; a sealant and a 3-month maintenance clean do the rest.
